Academy of Episcopal Studies

The senior-level educational and formational institution of KDCMF, established for the theological, pastoral, and administrative formation of bishops and episcopal leaders.

Operates under the direct authority of the Office of the Presiding Bishop and in accountability to the College of Bishops.

Academy of Episcopal Studies

Founding Pillar: The Academy of Episcopal Studies was established upon the spiritual vision, episcopal leadership, and foundational work of Bishop Gerald West Phipps, whose pioneering commitment to apostolic order, episcopal integrity, and ministerial unity serves as the enduring cornerstone of the Academy. Bishop Phipps is hereby recognized in perpetuity as the Founding Pillar of the Academy of Episcopal Studies.

Purpose and Identity

AES exists to strengthen the episcopacy by providing structured instruction, guided reflection, and disciplined formation for those entrusted with apostolic oversight.

Its purpose is not to confer ecclesiastical rank, jurisdiction, or consecratory authority, but to prepare, refine, and support bishops in the faithful execution of their sacred responsibilities.

AES affirms that consecration is not the end of formation, but the beginning of deeper responsibility, requiring ongoing growth and refinement.

Formation Philosophy

Education within AES is:

  • Biblically anchored
  • Theologically rigorous
